Our Story
Our marriage story and relationship begins in a most unusual way, with two empty people, seeking to be known in the other person. We both sought affirmation, worth and wholeness in each other, and when it appeared that we were being fulfilled , we dove into a relationship that hurt others, and in time, ignited our shame. You may have a similar story and thus our beginnings may not seem so unusual, but I think we have some differences, please read on.
You see our relationship did not have a storybook beginning. It is a story you wouldn’t want for your kids. The story begins on a basketball court, Monique - player, Vic - college coach. Monique was beginning her college career as a student athlete; Vic near the height of his coaching career, married with two kids. Simply summed up, our relationship begins with an affair and resulted in hurt, wounds and pain for all involved, and eventually included separation and divorce.
On our wedding day, July 18, 1992, we brought with us buried baggage packed with the stinky clothes of guilt, shame, anger, blame, unforgiveness and resentment. Although buried, the issues inside our suitcase remained alive ; eventually sucking the very life out of our relationship. On this special day, before God, our family and friends we celebrated, and making a promise to each other, until death do we part. Blind and bound were we to the gaping wounds of our souls that would later spread infection to almost every aspect of our lives, threatening to kill the life long commitment we had made.
This infection led us into hopelessness and we found ourselves disillusioned, confused, separated and headed for divorce. Where would we find answers for our hopelessness and despair? Who could help us?
Over the past 25 years of our marriage, it has taken courage, trust, risk and a “band of brothers and sisters” to lead us to wholeness, health and freedom in Christ. Because of God’s grace, the stench of those stinky clothes no longer defines who we are or controls our future. “We run in the path of His commands because He has set our hearts free.” Psalm 119:32. Free. Free living is not void of failure, temptations and imperfect behavior. It is life characterized by humility, openness and honesty, trusting God and others with me; unbound by the past and infused with hope for the future.
